Description

Selective laser melting (SLM) is widely used to manufacture high-performance AlSi10Mg components for aerospace, automotive, and biomedical applications due to its ability to produce complex geometries with excellent mechanical properties. However, the economic viability of SLM depends on efficient powder reuse, making it essential to understand how repeated recycling influences the mechanical performance of fabricated parts. This study aims to investigate the effect of powder reuse on the tensile properties of SLM-produced AlSi10Mg alloy by comparing specimens manufactured from virgin and recycled powders over multiple reuse cycles. Tensile specimens will be fabricated using an iSLM160 selective laser melting system under identical processing conditions with controlled powder recycling procedures involving routine sieving and powder replenishment. Mechanical testing will be performed in accordance with ASTM E8 to determine ultimate tensile strength, yield strength, and elongation at fracture. The tensile properties of specimens produced from virgin and reused powders will be compared to evaluate the influence of powder reuse on mechanical performance. The outcomes of this study are expected to provide experimental evidence on the feasibility of powder recycling in SLM while maintaining acceptable tensile properties. The findings will contribute to the development of practical powder reuse strategies that improve material utilization, reduce manufacturing costs, and support more sustainable industrial additive manufacturing practices.
